Head basketball coach Adras resigns

The Mike Adras era is officially over at NAU.

The 13-year head coach announced his resignation from the program Friday afternoon, effective immediately. In his time as the Lumberjacks head coach, Adras compiled a record of 193-170, leading the Jacks to five Big Sky Conference championship game appearances and a selection to the NCAA Tournament in 2000.

“Coach Adras has been a valuable member of the NAU and Flagstaff community for 20 years,” NAU president John Haeger said in an official statement. “We thank him for all he has contributed to the basketball program and to the university, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Adras will be replaced by current radio color commentator Dave Brown, who has spent time as the NAU women’s basketball coach and also initiated the program at Yavapai College, but has not been on the sidelines since 1990.

“I’m personally committed to the success of the men’s basketball program,” Brown said. “I have worked closely with the athletes and the program for years, and I’m confident the Lumberjacks will perform well on and off the court.”

Brown will only be serving as the team’s coach on an interim basis, as the search to find a permanent replacement will begin immediately.

“I am proud of what my team has built at NAU and of our student athletes,” Adras said, who was promoted from assistant coach in 1999.

The Jacks take on Cal State Bakersfield this evening at 6:35 in the Rolle Activity Center, looking to improve on their 2-7 record.
