Author to speak about Arizona’s history in honor of centennial

NAU is helping celebrate Arizona’s centennial by hosting a presentation by renowned Arizona historian, Lisa Schnebly Heidinger. The NAU alumna, graduated in 1987, will give a presentation on Feb. 8 at the High Country Conference Center from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Heidinger will discuss her newest book, Arizona: 100 Years Grand, which reminisces over Arizona’s century of statehood.  The book covers various historical and cultural events, like the creation of state borders and the opening ceremony of the Arizona Inn.  The book also includes a forward with contributions from state celebrities such as Gov. Bruce Babbitt, Gov. Rose Mofford and Sen. John McCain.

State history is a topic Heidinger is very familiar with, because she has written six different books concerning Arizona history and her experiences as a local journalist.  Heidinger has written and worked for newspapers, television stations and magazines across the state, including Arizona Highways, Tucson Lifestyle magazine, KTVK-TV (Flagstaff) and the Arizona Republic.  She now travels to give speeches on the subject as well.

Aside from her extensive knowledge on the state’s history and happenings, Heidinger has familiar ties to Arizona in her genealogy.  The town of Sedona was named after her pioneering great-grandmother, Sedona Schnebly, and Schenbly Hill Road was named for her great-grandfather, T. Carl Schenbly.  However, on her website, Heidinger admits to not truly exploring her historical roots until her adult years.

Flagstaff will continue to celebrate by hosting an exhibit highlighting Arizona’s history in the Cline Library on Feb. 14, the official date of Arizona’s centennial.
