The NAU Track and Field program sent three athletes to Iowa State University in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA indoor national championships and the trio placed in the top-3 in their respective events.
The three athletes that participated were freshman jumper and hurdler Deante Kemper and senior throwers Nicole Elliot and Pascal Tang.
Kemper, who only a week before took the high jump crown at the Big Sky indoor championship meet, followed that up with another victory, clearing 7′ 1/4″, defeating the field of six participants. Every mark he successfully posted was on his first attempt at each height.
“His performance showed that he has a promising future ahead of him with NAU,” said assistant coach Oscar Duncan via NAU Athletics.
Elliot and Tang both finished second in the weight throw. Along with Kemper, Elliot and Tang headed to Iowa State as Big Sky indoor champions in the weight throw. Elliot’s top distance for the meet was 63’ 11.5” and Tang’s farthest throw was 63’ 8.25”. Neither Elliot or Tang surpassed their season bests.
“It was a good capstone to a great indoor season for all of our participants,” Duncan said.
The only remaining indoor performer for the Lumberjacks is All-American and Big Sky indoor championship meet MVP Diego Estrada. He will be competing at the NCAA national indoor meet this Friday and Saturday in Idaho.
