Jack Chat: Demi Schmeider

This week, The Lumberjack sat down with freshman midfielder Demi Schmeider, who is the points leader for the Lumberjack soccer team this season and also a Flagstaff native.
The Lumberjack: Growing up in Flagstaff, what is your favorite aspect of the city?
Demi Schmeider: My favorite part was probably being able to go downtown with my friends. We spent a lot of time in Brookside Chocolate Factory and walking around the Old Town Shops.
LJ: If you could be any cartoon character, which one would you be?
DS: This might take me a second . . . I want to be Buttercup from “The Powerpuff Girls.”
LJ: Who are some of your favorite athletes?
DS: I don’t want to go with the generic ones, everybody’s favorites. Steve Nash, always a big fan of Steve Nash.
LJ: What is one fact about you that you want readers to know?
DS: I want people to know that I really do love Flagstaff and I am a very big fan of what goes on here. I love all of the local things around here.
LJ: Do you have any hidden talents?
DS: I like to write; I really like to write. I’d say that’s a hidden talent.
LJ: What are some of your favorite songs?
DS: “No Rain” by Blind Melon, “Sunshine” by Atmosphere; yeah, those are two of my favorites.
LJ: If you could have dinner with any person through history, who would it be and why?
DS: I’d have to say Ghandi, because I’d be very interested to hear his ideas on life and how he views things.
LJ: What are your favorite movies?
DS: Forest Gump, Remember the Titans, um, Pretty Woman. I’ll go with those three.
LJ: Best memory from high school?
DS: Hmm, I’m going to say scoring a goal in overtime to move on to the semifinals in state as well as getting MVP all-region sophomore year.
LJ: Any pregame rituals?
DS: I meditate. I always meditate before games. I go from my meditation to my pump-up music, that’s a good transition.
LJ: What will you be for Halloween?
DS: What were some of our ideas . . . I was thinking of being an Avatar from the movie Avatar, or Stitch from Lilo and Stich.
LJ: When you were young, what did you want to be?
DS: I wanted to be a veterinarian, because I’ve always really liked animals. At one point I wanted to be a firefighter as well, but I don’t think I’m going to follow through with that one.
LJ: Are you a Bieleber?
DS: What is that? (A fan of Justin Bieber) Oh hahaha! Yes, yes I am a fan of Justin Bieber. More so recently. I wasn’t ever at first. I hated him, but he’s grown on me!
LJ: Favorite thing to do in your down time?
DS: Mostly relax with friends. I like to be outside. So anything just hanging out outside. I like to go to the creeks a lot, we have Clear Creek and Oak Creek. I spend a lot of time there in the summer.
LJ: Favorite thing about NAU?
DS: Everyone is really nice and welcoming. There’s not anyone you feel you can’t approach. Everyone is on an even playing field and there’s a common level of respect among the students.
